Help! I found a cockroach in my home!

Roaches come in a variety of colors and sizes, but will all result in the same reaction when found inside a home. GROSS!

If you have found a roach inside of your home, you will first want to know what type of roach you are dealing with.

  • American Roaches: Over 1.5 inches long, reddish brown color with a yellowish margin behind the head, delicate hind wings, and long segmented antennae.
  • Brown Banded Roaches: 5/8 inches long, tan to light brown with two light colored bands across the wings.
  • German Roaches: Average length is .5 inches, color varies from tan to almost black, and it has two dark streaks running behind the head to the base of the wings.
  • Oriental Roaches: Size varies from .5 inches to over 1 inch long, dark brown to black in color, and has a glossy body.
  • Smokybrown Roaches: Closely related to the American roach. 1-1 ½ inches long, and dark brown, mahogany in color. The thorax is dark and shiny, which is the main difference between the smokybrown roach and American roach.
  • Wood Roaches: ¾ to 1-½ inches long, brown in color, with long antennae and spiny legs.

Discovering what roach you are infested with will help immensely with the methods of control and figuring out what potential damages you are facing.

Cockroach habits

Upon finding a roach in your home, know it probably is not alone.  Cockroaches are very elusive insects. They can travel over 3 miles per hour, which is 50 lengths of the roaches body per second. Combining the speed and ability to fit under small gaps can make them difficult to catch.

A cockroach will consume any food available to them. Their preferred diets include sweets, meats, and starches, but they are also known to consume other items such as hair, books, and decaying matter. Whatever is available to them, cockroaches will eat.

Cockroaches are nocturnal and will seek food only at nighttime in the dark. Seeing a roach in the daytime is normally a sign of the insect being pushed out due to a severe infestation.

What difficulties come with a cockroach infestation?

Cockroaches are filthy!! They carry diseases that can easily be spread, cause contamination in our food, and create complications with allergies and asthma. Cockroaches are known to spread over 33 kinds of bacteria. Among the 33 bacteria includes, E. Coli and Salmonella, sex parasitic worms and more than seven types of human pathogens. As cockroaches travel, they pick up germs from decaying matter or sewage and transfer these germs to food or onto counters. The allergens in cockroach feces, saliva and body parts is what will trigger asthma problems.
